Topsoil & leveling
We can discuss topsoil and basic leveling to prepare for grass or landscaping. Confirm whether seed or additional restoration is included.
Tell us your end goal: grass, a flower bed, another tree or construction. The required depth and follow-up work may be different.
Before the machine arrives
Access and underground features come first.
- Gates and turns: share the narrowest access point, slopes and steps. We’ll check whether the equipment can reach the stump.
- Utilities: required utility locating must be addressed before grinding. Private lines and owner-installed features may need separate identification.
- Hidden property features: point out irrigation, landscape lighting, septic components and buried structures.
- The work zone: move vehicles and movable items as agreed, and keep people and pets away from the operating area.
Ground conditions, nearby walls and fencing can limit the approach. We explain those limits before work begins.
Set realistic expectations
Below grade doesn’t mean every root is gone.
We agree on the grinding depth and working area for your project. Surface roots may be addressed when included and when access and underground conditions allow.
Some roots will remain beyond the ground area. Removing every underground root is not part of ordinary stump grinding. A future building, hardscape or replacement tree may need additional preparation.
As remaining organic material breaks down, settling can occur. Replacing excess woody debris with suitable soil and monitoring the area helps with the next stage of lawn repair.

How deep do you grind a stump?
We discuss an appropriate below-grade depth for your site and intended use. Utilities, access and obstacles may limit the work. Ask for the depth and any surface-root work to be specified in your quote.
Can you fit through my backyard gate?
We need to check the actual gate opening, turns, slope and ground conditions against the equipment required. Share the narrowest opening and photos of the route. Do not remove a fence before discussing access with us.
Will the wood chips be hauled away?
That depends on the scope you choose. Grindings can be left on site or excess material can be removed when included in the quote. Topsoil and leveling are additional details to agree on before grinding.
Can I plant grass where the stump was?
Often, but the area needs suitable preparation. Excess wood chips may need to be removed and replaced with appropriate soil before seeding. Remaining material can settle as it decomposes, so some later attention may be needed.
Can I plant a new tree in the same spot?
The remaining roots and soil conditions can make the exact old location unsuitable without additional work. Discuss the planting plan before grinding so you understand what preparation or an alternative planting location may be needed.
Does grinding remove every root?
No. It removes the stump within the agreed grinding area and depth. Surface roots may be included separately. Roots extending farther through the soil generally remain unless other work is specified.
What affects stump grinding cost?
Stump diameter including the flare, number of stumps, location, access, obstacles, grinding depth and cleanup choices all affect the price. A small accessible stump and a large stump behind a fence can require very different work.
