We added Plant Health Care because customers wanted more than a choice between trimming and removal. Our goal is to explain realistic preservation options, supported by assessment, appropriate treatment and follow-up. Not every declining tree can—or should—be saved.

Our team includes certified pesticide applicators licensed through the Office of Indiana State Chemist. We assess tree health concerns and recommend appropriate treatments based on the tree, site and diagnosis.

Diagnosis before application

We look beyond the leaves.

Tree health can be affected by several issues at once. We review symptoms and history alongside the surrounding soil and root zone before recommending a product or program.

Tree & canopy

Species, condition, growth pattern, dieback, leaf symptoms and visible insect or disease activity.

Site & root zone

Soil moisture, drainage, mulch, compaction, exposed roots and recent construction or landscape changes.

Testing when useful

Soil sampling, pH evaluation or other analysis when it helps resolve the treatment decision.

Emerald ash borer treatment

Qualifying ash trees may benefit from preventive or ongoing treatment. We assess canopy condition, tree value, pest pressure and the feasibility of continued care before recommending a plan.

Advanced decline may limit the prospects for preservation. Treatment is not a promise to restore a severely damaged tree.

Trunk injections can deliver appropriate treatments for certain pests, diseases or nutrient concerns. They are one option—not the correct method for every tree problem.

Species, tree condition, product labeling and treatment timing determine suitability.

Insect management

Identify the pest first

We assess the insect and the damage it is causing before selecting control measures. Visible insects are not automatically harmful or the cause of decline.

Application methods may include suitable trunk, soil or foliar treatments according to the diagnosed concern and label.

Disease management

Leaf spots, dieback & recurring disease

Symptoms need to be distinguished from drought, root stress and other non-disease causes. Testing may be appropriate when a diagnosis is uncertain.

A treatment plan can include cultural recommendations, targeted applications and monitoring.

Seasonal disease pressure

Apple scab treatment

Apple and crabapple trees with recurring leaf spotting or early leaf drop may need an apple-scab management plan. Correct identification and treatment timing matter.

Discuss the next season’s prevention as well as the current tree condition; treatment does not erase existing leaf damage.

Growth management

Tree growth regulation

Growth regulation may be considered for suitable trees as part of a broader care plan. The reason for treatment, species, condition and nearby structures guide that decision.

It does not repair structural defects or replace necessary clearance pruning.

All applications depend on the diagnosis, product label, season and site. There is no universal injection or fertilizer that resolves every declining tree.

Yellow maple? Pale foliage?

Chlorosis needs a cause—not a guess.

Yellowing can be associated with nutrient availability, soil pH, moisture, root problems or other stress. Even similar-looking leaves can call for different recommendations.

We can assess nutrient and micronutrient concerns and recommend soil or tissue analysis when useful. The results help determine whether targeted applications, root-zone care or a change in site management is appropriate.

Soil & root health

A treatment plan may start underground.

Compaction, drainage problems, drought, construction disturbance and inappropriate mulching can stress roots. Adding fertilizer without understanding those conditions may miss the real issue.

Depending on the assessment, care may include soil and root-zone treatments, targeted nutrient applications, amendments, moisture-management recommendations or steps to support root development.

We also discuss soil that is difficult to wet, water-retention concerns and practical changes to watering or mulch. No product can undo every form of root damage.

Questions about preserving a tree

Can you tell what is wrong from a photograph?

Photos help begin the conversation, but they may not reveal the root or site conditions behind a symptom. An on-site assessment and, when appropriate, testing can improve the diagnosis and treatment decision.

Can every declining tree be saved?

No. Species, extent of decline, structural condition, root damage and the cause of the problem affect the options. We explain when treatment is reasonable and when removal or another approach may be more appropriate.

Is my ash tree a candidate for emerald ash borer treatment?

That depends on its condition, canopy, extent of damage and the practicality of ongoing care. An assessment helps determine whether preventive or continued treatment is justified. Severely declining ash trees may not be suitable candidates.

Are tree injections better than soil treatments?

Neither method is best for every problem. The target concern, tree species, condition, site and product label determine the application method. Some issues require changes to growing conditions rather than a pesticide or nutrient treatment.

Does a yellow maple need iron or manganese?

Yellowing alone does not tell us which nutrient, if any, is needed. Species, soil pH, root condition, moisture and test results can help guide a recommendation. We assess those factors rather than choosing a nutrient from leaf color alone.

Can you treat recurring apple scab?

We can assess apples and crabapples with symptoms consistent with apple scab and discuss a management plan. Diagnosis and timing are important, and preventive planning may be part of the recommendation. Existing damaged leaves will not return to their original condition.

Will fertilizing fix a stressed tree?

Not necessarily. Poor drainage, compaction, damaged roots or disease may be the more important problem. Fertilizer or micronutrient applications should be based on an assessment and useful test information, not applied automatically.

How soon will I see a response?

Response depends on the condition, species, treatment and time of year. Some changes may be assessed over a growing season or longer. We explain realistic monitoring and follow-up without guaranteeing a specific recovery time.

What should I bring to a tree health assessment?

Share symptom photos, the timeline, past treatments, watering practices, any soil or tissue tests and recent changes around the tree. These details help us distinguish recurring problems from new site stress.
