“Trim the tree” can mean several different things.

Lift the canopy
Selectively address lower branches over driveways, walkways and work areas. Removing too much of the lower canopy at once can affect the tree’s balance and health.
Remove deadwood
Identify and remove dead, broken or damaged branches where appropriate. Deadwood removal can improve the condition of the canopy and reduce some branch-failure hazards.
Reduce branch weight
Shorten selected branches back to suitable lateral growth when practical. This can address excessive extension over a house or driveway without indiscriminately cutting the whole tree down in height.
Guide the structure
Address competing leaders, rubbing branches and poorly positioned growth while the tree is developing. A measured plan can avoid unnecessarily large cuts later.
Thin selectively
Where justified, remove selected branches to manage canopy density. Thinning is not the same as stripping the interior or leaving foliage only at branch tips.
Create useful separation
Manage branches contacting roofs, siding or nearby plantings. We consider future growth, retained foliage and how much clearance is realistic for the tree.
The difference is in the cuts
Pruning should serve a purpose.
Topping creates another problem.
Indiscriminate heading cuts can remove too much leaf area and encourage poorly attached regrowth. A tree that looks smaller today may need more corrective work later.
Our approach considers suitable branch unions, cut placement, retained foliage and the amount removed. Pruning objectives should be consistent with recognized ANSI A300 practices—not a fixed percentage applied to every tree.
Pruning can reduce certain risks. It cannot make a tree storm-proof or eliminate every possibility of failure.
Timing & tree health
The right season depends on the tree and the reason.
Dormant-season pruning can make structure easier to assess, but species, flowering, disease concerns and existing damage influence timing. A hanging broken limb may need attention much sooner than a routine clearance request.
Tell us about recent storm damage, changes in foliage or earlier pruning. If thinning leaves or dieback point to a health problem, cutting alone may not address the cause.

Walk through the trees and your concerns. Identify clearance needs, defects, retained branches and any treatment questions.
Describe the pruning objective and the trees included. Discuss equipment access, brush removal and any limits to the requested result.
Use climbers, bucket trucks or aerial equipment as the site requires. Manage the work zone and lower branches carefully around structures.
Complete the agreed debris cleanup and review the finished canopy. Discuss follow-up care when the tree needs a longer-term plan.

Access and cleanup are part of the plan.
Homes, fences, parked vehicles and garden beds shape how the crew works. We discuss equipment routes and use ground-protection measures, including mats where appropriate.
Brush and limb handling should be included in the written scope. Keep people and pets away from the active work area, and point out irrigation, septic components and other hidden features before setup.
For branches near utility lines, coordination with the utility may be necessary. Please don’t attempt to cut or pull branches contacting a wire.

How much should be removed from my tree?
There is no single amount that suits every tree. Species, age, vigor, defects and the purpose of pruning all matter. We discuss the intended result and may recommend smaller or staged work instead of removing too much foliage at once.
Can you lower a tree without topping it?
Selective reduction may be appropriate when suitable branches and the tree’s condition allow it. Not every mature tree can be substantially shortened while retaining acceptable structure. We assess realistic options before recommending the work.
Can pruning help with branches over my roof?
Often, selected clearance or reduction cuts can help. The available branch structure, roof access and how much healthy canopy would remain influence what is appropriate. We won’t promise a clearance result that requires damaging the tree.
Does pruning prevent storm damage?
Removing damaged branches and addressing selected structural problems can reduce some risks, but no pruning program eliminates storm damage or all tree risk. Newly split, hanging or uprooted trees require an emergency assessment.
Why not strip out all the small inside branches?
Removing excessive interior growth can shift foliage and weight toward branch tips and stress the tree. Canopy thinning should be selective and tied to a specific objective, while preserving an appropriate distribution of foliage.
What affects the price of tree trimming?
The number and size of trees, canopy access, condition, pruning objectives, nearby structures and debris handling affect cost. Photos can help start the conversation, but a useful scope depends on assessing the trees and the property.

What if the tree needs more than pruning?
Health symptoms may call for diagnosis and Plant Health Care. Significant decay, instability or repeated failures may justify a removal assessment. We explain the options rather than assuming pruning solves every problem.
